New RCAR v3.0 and updates to four additional FE barrier models.

The Oasys LS-DYNA Environment introduces the new RCAR v3.0 model, along with updates to four additional Finite Element (FE) barrier models.
Arup and Oasys Ltd. have a proven track record of over 20 years of experience in barrier development, using established modelling techniques that demonstrate robustness and fidelity, including our collaboration with Cellbond.
These models have been developed to take advantage of the latest features within the Ansys LS-DYNA code and are designed to deliver robust, efficient, and accurate analysis.
Key updates in this release include:
- Arup RCAR v3.0 – Geometry update and material recalibration
- NHTSA MDB Side/Rear Shell v1.1 – Improved control cards, contact definitions, and tire modelling
- SC-MDB Shell v1.3 – Enhanced back plate connections plus revisions to internal and barrier-to-vehicle contact definitions[MK1]
- ODB Shell v1.2 – Refined bumper dimensions and updated contact definitions
- MPDB Shell v2.4 – Updated trolley tires and properties in line with the latest protocol specifications (v2, March 2025)
Arup RCAR v3.0
The Research Council for Automobile Repairs (RCAR) model has been developed according to RCAR Bumper Test Protocol Version 2.3 issued in July 2023.
The Ansys LS-DYNA model calibration has been run in MPP version of LS-DYNA R11.2.2 to ensure performance and accuracy and has been done using two crush strength correlation tests, these include:
- perpendicular and eccentric loading
- Crush Strength Test Speed run at 450 ± 50 mm/min
